If you live in the Great Lakes, you know about the emerald ash borer and ash trees. This tree was not a victim of EAB, but of a Stihl. Yes, unfortunately, it had to come down. A big glorious native Ash, we'll enjoy its warmth in the wood stove.

Two free Stihl saws, Stihl 036 Pro's that didn't run and were a mess. One I rebuilt completely, hours of cleaning with a toothbrush and brake clean, but came out like new. This video we'll take on the second saw that is proving to be in worse condition than its compression would have us believe.

Forget the "grenade gears". They run just fine without them.
Hi, it's a good video! How to reset the valve on this engine?
There isn't any valve adjustments on these Kohler Command engines, they use hydraulically actuated lifters, so no adjustments are made. It is a good idea to make sure the valves are properly lapped and free of carbon, but that should be it.
Thank you so much for your information it's helpful 😊
Craig where did you get the foot board rubber from? Fantastic build, I just started my 314A build, you’ve inspired me to go in deeper on my restoration.
I want to say I bought that from Wheel Horse Parts and More .com. I do plan to restore those foot rests and get new rubber, so when I start that soon, I'll post in my videos where I get things.
Had that same problem on my 420-lse years ago. Don't remember what caused it or how we fixed it lol. I just remember occasionally wiggling the fuel line until it would eventually stop.
It’s driving me nuts! Fact that it stops on its own sometimes it may be an air leak. It all started when I changed my fuel filter. Now I’m wondering if that fuel filter is too restrictive.🤷
@@CraigArndt I think it was something to do with the mechanical fuel metering system on those old kohler magnum 20's. been a long time since I've messed with it so I'm not too keen on how it works. The Onan's might have something similar.
Loved your plowing demonstration video Craig!
Thank you! Appreciate it Joseph!
Nicely done 👍 👍
I see you have your helper out there to find all the high spots
Diesel is a digger, he really can move more dirt than a Wheel Horse and in half the time. haha!
Crazy that you only have 300 views after 3 days with 10 THOUSANDS SUBSCRIBERS!?? What the heck is going on with youtube? Try Looking for rub marks on the intake manifold. I JUST had the same problem and found that my exhaust shield was rubbing on the side of the intake manifold. A lot of people say that they end up developing leaks over time and need to be split and resealed. But I just cut a 1/4" x 3/8" section of the heat shield out that was right there and then filled the rub mark with Permatex 1 minute gasket maker and it's been good since. Also, my starter ring gear on the flywheel and the starter pinion weren't meshing well from day one. Well it's been missing late and finally gave out yesterday. All I had to do was pull the starter and put 2 washers between the starter mount holes and the engine mount holes and it moved it much closer with still good clearance and it fixed and sounds WAY Better now when it starts. It Doesn't have that metallic grinding sound anymore. Andrew
I’m getting comments on videos I did six, seven years ago and hardly anything on current videos. It’s maddening. I had the intake off thinking one of those chrome looking gaskets failed, but it was good. This surging all started when I put a new fuel filter on last year or soon after that. Maybe I dislodged some dirt, but I tore that carb down and cleaned it good. Hearing that surging makes me so angry LOL. Oh I need to check my starter ring gear as well, I noticed my flywheel had some outer teeth wear when I fixed my stator that was loose. I may need to add a couple washers, must be a thing with these engines. Have a good weekend Andrew.
@CraigArndt That surging comes up on Redsquare occasionally too. All of our machines are older and I don't have any Onan at all but I know there's occasional comments on there.... They might be able to help you out.
Very Nice Job!!
Thanks Norman!
Nicely done. Looking forward to seeing the Horse get some lovin'.
Getting excited to seeing it back in new condition. Thanks!
Craig, periwinkle and English ivy are the two hardest plants to get rid of. The wheel horse did a good job.
You aren’t kidding, super deep roots that are like wire. Pretty flowers but didn’t choke out the weeds like pachysandra does. Thanks for checking it out!
I think that one of those Horrible Freight’s tow behind backhoes would fit nicely behind the Horse! A great addition to the channel!
How did you order the drive belts? I can’t seem to find how to do so for mine
Jacks Small Engines has them.
I've made this swap, and my TB Pony just pops wheelies, and tries to set land speed records. It's no longer a tiller but a land speed record device. Any tips? Even at the lowest RPM that will sustain forward drive and tine rotation it's out of control fast.
Nothing should have changed except for losing reverse. I had to add some washers to align the pulleys so the belt didn’t keep coming off, but tine speed hasn’t changed. Not sure what could have happened there, unless you changed pulley diameters.
Good advice on the bone!! Yeah, now I am hungry!!
Craig, lawn, garden, fix'en stuff and BBQ = GREAT!!!!
Looks sooo Good!!
Oh my that looks great and it tastes fabulous too. Enjoy it
I didnt know there is a grease zirk at the steering assembley, this might make my life easier while maneuvering!
They hid that one, definitely makes a difference steering.
Man that makes Quick work of splitting wood.
The log splitter worked great and the engine didn’t even strain on those big logs. Nice work Craig
she didnt even grunt!
Thanks for the tutorial, Craig. I have this project coming up as well.
You got a lot of good stuff going on there. Your splitter looks like it's similar in size and capabilities to one we picked up a few seasons ago that was built by a logger up here in maine. It has served us very well. I've been considering adding a set of crossblades to the splitting section. Is that something you have thought about? I'll be looking forward to your Wheel Horse video. Between my other half and i, we have over a dozen. Hers are all from the 60s and mine are from the 70s, except for the one mid-80s with the backhoe that we share. If you need any help with paint colors or parts or advice I'm sure the folks on Red Square would be glad to help you out.
If I do any modifications to the splitter it would be a log lift, been thinking of that. Some of these rounds are a load to lift!
@@CraigArndt Oh yeah. Good idea!
Your splitter works very well!
Nice job Craig, that saw cuts up a storm. Could not ask for more than that.
You do know that "The First Cut is the Deepest" LOL!
Awesome! Thanks for the video! I'm looking at getting one real soon and have been soaking up all I can on the attaching system and maintenance points. This video was great for showing the grease points!
Glad I could help!
sounds and cuts good Craig...hope to see a lil during the WeelHorse restoration
Very helpful
Glad it helped
I have one of the same unit it was given to me by a friend he said he can’t get it started so give it to me it is so hard to pull to start I am wondering if something is wrong with it
Turn gas on and leaks.Any fix ideas?
Where does it leak from? The gas valve, carburetor or fuel line?
Gas valve
I believe that This is the exact problem I have. The governor arm does not adjust with speed. . I cleaned up everything, got a new carbuerator, adjusted the tension mechanism and never could get the governor to move much more than a few millimeters movement with rpm. I sort of thought the weigts were gummed up. I have a John deere LT 155 and it is about 22 years old and bought it from a neigbor a year ago. Thanks for the video and bet my problem is exactly what you show. Problem is for me I'm 75 and things are more difficult. Guess I will use it without governor for a while then tackle pulling the motor off. Thanks
Is top dead center necessary if you put it back exactly as it was taken apart and preload the lifters?
TDC is how it’s stated in the service manual, with them loose to adjust.
@@CraigArndt Thanks
I swear these wheel horse 516,,518 and 520's are almost like a car!!! The dash is phenomenal ❤
Just serviced the spare mower. Husqvarna yth180. Paid about the same, a little less. Wix 51348. 2 qts oil. Was not going to pay 13 bucks for a wix when the MS micro guard select is a relabeled Wix for 4 bucks less. Oil was crazy high. Some people prefer Wix, some people prefer Purolator. Some people prefer... but the thing is Mann Hummel owns and makes most them. So..I just bought Omni oil.. sold by O'Reilly.. wasn't going to pay double per quart. Mine sounds like new. Dad would have used 30w and the download PDF says 30w or 5w30. I would not use either one. 10w30. When that mower came out 30w was still questionably better than multi weight but all that has changed. The reason I use 10w30 where 5w30 was is because back then when that was published 5w30 was a lot thicker within spec as it is now. Plus the machine isn't new and doesn't have variable valve timing or any of this modern stupid crap where you might save $1 at the pump per fill up (federal) and spend $13,000 on the back end for the engine replacement at lower mileage. That's the same reason a lot of people didn't like Valvoline synthetic because it was always thinner within grade than most others. It's the reason I never have liked Valvoline outside of their racing oil and their HM. I've never had an engine their synthetic would stay in but I've driven a lot of older vehicles with some internal wear. So I'm not saying the oil isn't good I'm just saying I never liked it because I had to add too much makeup oil on vehicles I did.. and spark plugs aren't a buck a piece anymore.
You have any idea what size the deck belt is?
Good saws. I’m looking for a 036 or 025
I need the other end closure plate oil seal hope it goes from outside in.
Ironically you also did a what's on the inside of a small block Chevy lifter video as well. Same lifter
I have a 20hp Kohler. The bottom of the lifters didn't look perfect, so I put 4 new SBC lifters in it, and it's ran perfectly for about 10 years now.
Very true! Thanks for checking out the video.
Nice Dogs! WOW! Sounds like a chainsaw Now! Would have never though of a sheer key being a problem! Nice work Craig!
One more question sir do you adjust both sides on top center or you have to set each side different please let me know
Each side is set to TDC when you adjust them. So after you do one, roll the engine over to TDC on the other cylinder.
Ok
Ok thanks I was setting both of the cylinders on the TDC and I wasn't getting it to start so each one have to set separately set one an turn the flywheel to TDC an set the other side am i correct will thanks once again
Thanks my friend have a blessed day
Some like you figured it out Craig. A sheared flywheel key. Good work going down the checklist
same happened to me beacuse i dont think i had the nut tight
Can you give me the in take and the exhaust adjustment please
.005", .013" intake/exhaust.
Thanks bro
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Step 1 drain out the excessive oil
Step 1 watch the video. Step 2- see that was already answered and in the pinned comment section. 🙄
4:32 how do you get the pintle assembly out? And if two of the balls fell out when I pulled the motor rotor out. How can you find their correct placement?
You should go on Red Square.com and get the Eaton 1100 service manual, its free. I haven't rebuilt that in a long time, but there was a form it tells you to build out of a 2x4 to get the pump elevated so you can pull it out (think that was the part). If you lost two balls use a micro meter to see if there is a difference in either ball, or hole. I remember in the manual to not lose the balls. LOL.
How did you manage to keep the ball bearings in place when putting it back together?
Get yourself some long zip ties from Harbor Freight. They work perfectly, that’s what I did.
And all those balls look the same but they are not! Make sure you keep them in the same hole they came out of.
You should take the oil out
You're the 1001th person that's said that! And if you watched the video, you'd see I took the oil out. LOL.
Just ordered mine and can’t wait to get it installed on my 312-8
You'll really like it. I use it all the time. I put a couple old disc brakes on the back of the hitch/ball, adds 40 pounds off the back. Lots of uses for that hitch.
